The Solution to the Conflict in Yalimo Can Only Be Settled By Custom

PAPUADAILY –The chairman of the Papuan People’s Council (MRP) Timothy Murib assessed that only a traditional procession could resolve the political conflict in Yalimo.

“So, between camps number 01 and number 02, we must sit together in a customary manner to save the community. If we talk about positive law, then we will fight each other,” said Timothy in Jayapura, Thursday (8/7/2021).

According to him, with the re-voting (PSU), according to Timothy, the community feels that there will be no more legal problems.

“When it comes to positive law, the Constitutional Court decided to re-election. Look at the reality of conditions in Yalimo’s jurisdiction, all facilities have been destroyed, the Court can imagine what the psychological condition of the community is like,” he said.

Timothy said that carrying out the PSU as a whole without including the Erdi Dabi-Jhon Wilil pair could lead to potential clashes between communities. “Tomorrow (when PSU) lives are at stake between supporters of serial number 01 and serial number 02, is there a guarantee of safety, who wants to give guarantees for the following elections? Let’s sit together traditionally so that this positive law also understands, “said  Timothy.

With the absence of a leader in Yalimo, Timothy hopes that the Papua Provincial Government and the central government can immediately take a stand. Moreover, the terms of Lakius Peyon and Erdi Dabi will end on July 16, 2021.

“I will propose at the Forkopimda meeting that the Papua Provincial Government appoint a neutral acting regent,” said Timothy.

As is known, the 2020 Yalimo Pilkada will be followed by two pairs of regional head candidates, namely serial number 01 Erdi Dabi-Jhon Wilil, and serial number 02 Lakiyus Peyon-Nahum Mabel.

From the results of the Yalimo General Election Commission (KPU) plenary meeting on December 18, 2020, the KPU determined candidate pair number 01 was the winner with 47,881 votes, or 4,814 votes ahead of its rivals.

However, the decision was challenged to the Constitutional Court (MK) by candidate pair number 02. On March 19, 2021, the Constitutional Court ordered the Yalimo KPU to conduct PSU at 105 polling stations spread over the Apalapsili and Welarek districts.

The PSU was held on May 5, 2021 and on May 15, 2021. The KPU then decided Erdi Dabi-Jhon Wilil to be the winner of the Yalimo Pilkada with 47,785 votes, or 4,732 votes ahead of his opponent.

However, the pair Lakiyus Peyon-Nahum Mabel again sued the result to the Constitutional Court. This time, the subject of the lawsuit is the status of Erdi Dabi, who is a former convict who should not be able to participate in the Pilkada.

On June 29, 2021, the Constitutional Court granted the claim and disqualified the participation of the Erdi Dabi-Jhon Wilil pair from the Yalimo Pilkada. The Constitutional Court also ordered the Yalimo KPU to carry out a re-election starting from the registration stage for Pilkada participants.

A conflict arose after the Constitutional Court disqualified the participation of the Erdi Dabi-Jhon Wilil pair. The mob set fire to several offices and kiosks in Elelim District on Tuesday (29/6/2021).

A number of government buildings were burned, including the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) Office, KPU Office, BPMK Office, Transportation Service Office, Health Service Office, DPRD Office, Gakkumdu Office, and Bank Papua.  A total of 1,025 Yalimo residents have lost their homes.
