BI is optimistic that PON will have a positive impact on the Papuan economy

PAPUADAILY –Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for Papua Province, Naek Tigor Sinaga, said he was optimistic that the implementation of the XX National Sports Week or PON, next October, could have a positive impact on improving the economy.

“We estimate that the implementation of PON XX will provide an additional contribution to economic growth in Papua by 0.8 percent to 1.2 percent (yoy),” said Sinaga in his release while holding a Media Talk event at Fox Hotel Jayapura, Wednesday (30/30). 6/2021).

Sinaga said that the implementation of PON XX will involve approximately 25,000 athletes, officials, and the implementation committee. PON XX was held in four clusters, namely Mimika Regency, Merauke Regency, Jayapura Regency, and Jayapura City.

“This can encourage the Papuan economy as a whole through the economic cycle created by the implementation of the XX PON,” said Sinaga.

According to Sinaga, the majority of this growth was supported by construction sector activities for the construction of facilities and infrastructure to support PON XX. Likewise in other sectors, such as the provision of accommodation and food and drink, the transportation sector, trade, information and communication.

“Cooperation between Bank Indonesia and the government in the implementation of PON XX can certainly be improved to ensure the smooth implementation of PON,” said Sinaga.

Sinaga added that efforts to encourage the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code or QRIS to continue to be improved, one of which is the implementation of the Papua PON, which is targeted to provide 51,000 QRIS merchants to serve all payment transactions and support the success of PON.

“Of course, this cannot be separated from the support of infrastructure readiness and the availability of a stable internet network. QRIS is also important in helping minimize the spread of Covid-19 because it has contactless technology,” said Sinaga.
